The Queen of Calitzdorp is radiant in the Klein Karoo

The four-star graded Queen of Calitzdorp guesthouse is situated in the centre of Calitzdorp, in the Klein Karoo (or Little Karoo) which is famous as the “Port Wine Capital” of South Africa. Several wine cellars and restaurants are within walking distance.

Our fifteen luxury rooms are furnished to the highest standard with elegant solid wood furniture. The bathrooms boast glass enclosed showers and the basins have granite vanity tops. Two rooms can be converted to family rooms. Rooms with balconies have views over the adjacent Boplaas vineyards and the Nel’s river valley or over the town towards the Swartberg mountain range.

Rich gold brocade drapes frame the wooden sash windows and double doors throughout the dining and lounge areas. A traditional bull-nose stoep roof surrounds the face of the building and the annex, and a short walk through our beautiful garden brings one to the shady pool terrace. The whole experience is airy and cool, much needed during Klein Karoo summers.

Breakfast menus are changed regularly to reflect seasons and to celebrate the local food and wine festivals. We source local and grow our own where possible. We believe in using fresh, raw ingredients and the very best quality meats, eggs, cheeses, etc. available in the area. A welcome glass of port is always available. Pool-side service is available during the day.

The sun shines for 330 days per year in the Klein Karoo. The Queen of Calitzdorp takes full advantage of that fact with their impressive arrays of solar panels. Free electricity is a dream that many living in South Africa aspire to however, Adrian Leuthold’s (Director) choice was born out of the desire to use a clean source of energy. In addition to the investment in renewable solar energy, the guest house uses energy saving light bulbs, grey water storage is used in the gardens and we have a recycling project for all other waste.
