An accommodation type to suit every budget in Oudtshoorn

I am rather fond of travel quotes. “Round the corner there may wait, a new road or a secret gate” written by Tolkien this is one of my favourites.

The very act of packing a suitcase makes me happy, this is the moment the adventure begins. Sometimes it is a well-travelled and much-loved road, other times a new road with its own secret gate at the end.

A recent road trip to the Klein Karoo began thus with packing the suitcases and loading a new playlist. We had a full itinerary and new places to stay. Oudtshoorn has so many accommodation options from budget self-catering to gorgeous five-star luxury and and glamping option for those who prefer to camp in style

Six Backpacker options are available, these include Karoo Soul, Amber Lagoon and Swartberg Backpackers. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to self-catering with over 25 options including Kleinplaas, Oppi Dam Caravan Park and Self-Catering, The Featherbed and Wilgewandel Holiday Farm.

Farm stays accessed via dust roads make the adventure all the more fun when you finally leave the long hot tarred road with the anticipation of fields of crops and meandering animals. The four star De Denne Country Guest House is one such paradise. Twenty charming rooms set amongst rolling lawns and beautiful flower beds with more than enough room for children to roam or splash in one of their two sparkling pools. We spent a few nights here and it was truly tough leaving when the time came to move on.

Neighbours of De Denne, La Plume Guest Farm and Mooiplaas Guest Farm are also located in Volmoed. Other memorable farm stays include Surval Boutique Olive Estate, Oue Werf Guest Farm and Swartberg Country Manor.

If your taste for game reserves and all things wild calls, then you are in luck. Buffelsdrift Game Lodge situated just 6.5km from town is spot-on perfect. With 34 luxury tents on offer your options include either double or family preference or one of the 9 waterhole tents.
Other game lodge options in the area include Chandelier located 7km from Oudtshoorn on the road to George or Wildeholdekloof near Matjiesriver.

There is something about the people of Oudtshoorn, the sincere desire for visitors to relax and enjoy the fragrant country air, the unhurried pace of small-town life and the pleasure of sharing, I kid you not it is palpable!

So, whatever your road or secret gate, may you build extraordinary memories in this Klein Karoo district that will stay with you for a lifetime.
