Swartberg Backpackers

If you want to escape the busy city life, experience the beauty, captivating, exquisite and breathtaking views of the Swartberg Mountains and waterfall, Swartberg Backpackers is the perfect place for you. We are just 5 km from the famous Swartberg Pass.

An array of activities can be enjoyed on site, including a guided hiking trail to the waterfall and/or rock pool, a ride on a trailer hooked to a tractor to the dam for canoeing and swimming, target shooting with a paintball gun, volleyball, table tennis (In the Ark only) and much more. How about doing downhill mountain biking on the Swartberg Pass. The world-known Cango Caves is also only 17 km from us. Perhaps, have a cheese experience at Latana Cheese farm close-by; you can either taste or come and make your own.

At Kobus se Gat (only 5 km away), you can enjoy a Traditional South African Karoo Cuisine. Hiking trails are also available at the Swartberg Nature Reserve. The best times for hiking are April to May and September to October. Spectacular views are also a feature of Swartberg’s 4×4 route, which can be booked as a day or overnight route.

The accommodation will provide you with a full kitchen with an oven and refrigerator and barbecue facilities with free firewood. The Woodstock unit as well as the dorm has en-suite bathrooms. You can enjoy a waterfall, mountain and farm dam view from the units. Instead of electricity, we use solar electricity, gas and wood fires. This means no TV. The solar electricity provides enough power to charge a laptop, cellular phone, room lights as well as a portable 12V fridge. There are solar geysers and gas to provide warm water and a stainless steel “donkie” for the overcast and rainy days.

In the winter come and view the snow on the mountains. Gamkaskloof or “The Hell” is an exciting 2 hour 4×4 drive for the adventurers and is close by. There is plenty of flora and fauna to experience in the surrounds including eagles in the sky, trails of the Cape leopard, and the barking of wild baboons.
