Little Karoo Birding Adventures
Little Karoo Birding Adventures operates out of Oudtshoorn, the very heart of the Little Karoo (Afrikaans: Klein Karoo and Xhosa: Kancinane Kharu) and is owned and operated by Steven W Evans (PhD), a professional Ornithologist, Conservation Ecologist and Nature Guide.
Birding Tours include visiting areas around Oudtshoorn (to Calitzdorp) and Prince Albert for some rewarding birding in the Succulent Karoo Biome. Specials in the Succulent Karoo include Karoo Scrub-Robin, Karoo Lark, Karoo Chat, Rufous-eared Warbler, Layard’s Tit-babbler, Dusky Sunbird and Karoo Prinia. An area of Albany Thicket is located north west of Oudtshoorn and is good for Namaqua Warbler and Southern Tchagra.
Birding Tours to the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains provide some excellent Fynbos birding opportunities, specials include Protea Seedeater (Canary), Victorin’s Warbler, Cape Rockjumper and Orange-breasted Sunbird. In addition, the Outeniqua Mountains provide good opportunities for some Forest birding, specials include Knysna Turaco and Swee Waxbill.
Please take a look at Little Karoo Birding Adventures website, www.littlekaroobirding.co.za, for more information on the Little Karoo, neighbouring Fynbos and Forest habitats, and all the birds they contain.
Only an hours drive from the Indian Ocean [Wilderness (Outeniqua Pass) or Mossel Bay (Robertson Pass)] Oudtshoorn is an ideal family destination for birders and non-birders alike. For the non-birders there are the world famous Cango Caves to visit, other attractions include the Cango Wildlife Ranch, three ostrich show farms and much more to keep you busy while the birders are birding.
